If This is a natural disaster like Hurricane Katrina or a natural disaster like the explosion of an industrial chemical against the wind, what will you do now to protect you and your family can make the difference between life and death. Having survived, the reconstruction of their life and business quickly becomes critical.
Please do not for one moment think that Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) will be able to reach you in time unless already taken these steps to rescue yourself. Unfortunately, even after 10 days of rescue efforts after Katrina began, still There are people starving in New Orleans.

1) Without water loses its ability to make clear decisions, within 24 hours. Thirst kills you more faster than hunger. At work: Keep a backpack at work with bottled water as much as you can carry. Moreover, as in the dried fruit, energy bars, medications or vitamins daily and a small first aid kit. Keep a family emergency numbers on the list too. Home: Put at least enough water in sealed containers so that your family will have one gallon per day for two weeks. I just bought cellophane cases of quarters the size of plastic bottles water and stacked in the backyard picnic table. Even if some of it is compromised you still have other bottles intact. Exchange of water every six months – put a reminder on your calendar.
2) Create a disaster kit in your property outside your house and garage (in a back corner of your yard, for example). It's as easy as get a 55 gallon plastic garbage can with clips at the top to keep it closed. Or use a plastic / metal garden 'shed' in your yard.
3) Clean out your closets and put in layered clothing and sturdy shoes for each family member. You need a complete change of dry clothes that can be hot enough to sleep while dressed.
4) Clean camping equipment are not using: this is the perfect place for it. Tents, tarps, ponchos, sleeping bags or blankets (wool will keep you warm even when wet), cooking utensils, lighters, utensils, can opener and a pot for boiling water.
5) Make a separate sealed containers of food in it. Canned Goods as complete meals are ideal. Dried foods will use precious water to reconstitute. Instant coffee keeps withdrawal headaches away. If you smoke, put a carton of cigarettes to prevent withdrawal sickness. Concentrate on meals (eg beef stew, spaghetti) and carbohydrate-rich foods like cereal bars and fruit for dry of energy.
6) If you consume a protein drink (or power bar) regularly, throw in a large bowl (or a package of 12 cans / bars) and enough liquid to mix. This is a good food source concentrated.
7) Include another plastic sealed container with all the basic medicines or vitamins that you and your family should have. Some doctors will give two prescriptions once if you ask. Clean your bathroom cabinets and make sure to pack first-aid resources such as ibuprofen, Tylenol, aspirin, bandages, anti-bacterial ointment, etc. You can get the spending effective emergency kits home to Costco.
Important: a battery radio for emergency broadcasts, ideally a CB radio or Nextel phone network type of your list with the names of family, medical information and key contacts, as well as local numbers emergency. Call your friends / family outside your state to make upgrade information. Local access phone is often turned off or destroyed during emergencies.
